Mark Perry

Since the time of leaving New Zealand in 1999, at which time Prof. Perry joined the University of Western Ontario (Western) in Canada, he has been a primary investigator for many successful grant applications in Genomics, Computer Science, Law, and Agriculture,  exceeding $18M in value, and much of which was dedicated to biotechnology research. Uniquely in North America, he was promoted to Full Professor in two separate disciplines at Western, namely in Science and in Law, based on his outstanding academic and research contributions to these two diverse fields. In 2003, he was called to the Bar of the Law Society of Upper Canada, as Barrister and Solicitor.  To these areas he has contributed well over 100 papers, chapters and presentations. For over ten years, whilst in Canada, he held the position of was appointed Faculty Fellow of IBM’s Center for Advanced Studies, an appointment which was reviewed annually,  for his achievements in industry collaboration and contributions to cutting edge computing. Deciding to move back to the southern hemisphere for family reasons in 2012 disrupted that pathway. In Australia he  was solicited for the Professor of Law position at UNE primarily because of his multidisciplinary approach to research and teaching. Since joining UNE in June 2012, he has been appointed to leadership roles, and continued to hold leadership positions in Canada, for example on the College of Reviewers of Canada Research Chairs. Over the last decade, whilst continuing to conduct internationally acclaimed research and teaching, he has held the positions such as the Chair of Academic Board, UNE Council member, as well as providing governance support and oversight to many committees to aid their efficacy. In 2014, Western conferred on him the title of Emeritus Professor in acknowledgement of his contributions to both Science and Law.He has also continued to review prestigious appointment and research applications in Australia and overseas.
