Biographical Details

Dr Gamaliel Simanungkalit earned his PhD from the University of New England (UNE) under the supervision of Professor Roger Hegarty, investigating the use of sensor-based technologies to monitor supplement intake behaviours in grazing cattle. His research primarily focuses on developing models from on-animal and stationary sensor data, such as accelerometer and RFID technology, for monitoring animals at the individual level. Before his current role as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UNE, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at The University of Sydney on a project of strategic supplementation using lick blocks to mitigate methane (CH4) emissions and improve productivity in grazing cattle. This project employed a range of automated data collection instruments, such as GreenFeed®, Intergado®, cowManager®, Optiweigh®, and walk-over weighing (WoW) systems. In his current project at UNE, he is responsible for collecting, analysing, and validating data from automated monitoring systems to assess performance and CH4 emissions of beef cattle, with a particular focus on the GreenFeed® systemand the open-circuit respiratory chamber, while developing an ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID system and accelerometers to estimate individual feed intake in grazing cattle.
