Biographical Details

Adam has been involved in teaching chemistry and forensic science at UNE since 2007 in many roles and at many levels. Currently, Adam is on a fixed-term contract for the position of Lecturer in Chemistry at UNE. Since completing a BSc(Hons) at UNE, Adam has recently completed a PhD in physical organic chemistry under the supervision of Prof Steve Glover and A/Prof Chris Fellows.
 
Adam’s research is currently focused on the application of quantum chemical calculations to real systems to better understand the stereoelectronic effects governing their structure and reactivity. Of particular interest are anomeric amides, a novel and fascinating class of amide discovered here at UNE. These amides exhibit unusual structure and reactivity, and have potential applications as antibiotics and cancer chemotherapy drugs. Research in this area can inform organic synthesis and drug design, and help to build a better understanding of macromolecules like proteins and synthetic polymers. Adam is open to and interested in interdisciplinary research projects.
 
Several research avenues are available for prospective students to consider, particularly in the field of laboratory based physical organic chemical investigations of anomeric amides, including: synthesis of novel anomeric amides, acid/base-catalysed decompositions of known and new anomeric amides, and synthesis and antibiotic screening of anomeric amides.
