Signatory to International Statement on ASI (Future of Life Institute)

Description

Dr Potter was a signatory to an international statement advocating for a moratorium on the development of artificial superintelligence (ASI). This is a term referring to hypothetical AI systems that would surpass human intelligence across all cognitive domains. The statement, released by the Future of Life Institute, calls for the prohibition to remain in place until there is broad scientific
consensus that ASI can be developed safely and controllably, and until strong public support for such development has been established. Other signatories include leading global figures such as AI pioneers and Nobel laureates Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Sir Richard Branson, former US National Security Adviser Susan Rice, former Irish President Mary Robinson, and author and broadcaster Stephen Fry, among others.
