debates about the Copyright Amendment Bill 2025 (Cth) in Federal Parliament on Tuesday 3 February 2026. The Honourable Michael McCormack MP cited the title and themes of her 2023 Conversation article about ChatGPT and copyright. He stated, "I had a conversation earlier this afternoon with Michelle Grattan, somebody who I've got the utmost respect for. She runs the Conversation. We all know the fine journalism work that she has done for decades, and long may that continue. The Conversation, which I recommend people read, has really investigated this copyright angle – particularly, as the member for Griffith pointed out, in this changing and emerging world of ChatGPT and the information age in which we live. In in one article, author Wellett Potter, lecturer in law at the University of New England, writes, 'If ChatGPT wrote it, who owns the copyright?' – it's a good question – 'It depends on where you live, but in Australia it's complicated. ‘That's why we're here today. That's why we're discussing this."
